Kurdish Handcrafted Fês Hat
This Kurdish Fês is a handmade piece inspired by traditional Kurdish hats and the different cultural details we have collected from across Kurdistan.
We wanted to make something that feels connected to our history, but also has its own identity. That is why we created and designed every detail of this hat ourselves.
Kurdish Symbols
One of the special parts of this Fês is the coins and symbols used on the hat.
Traditional Kurdish hats have sometimes included Ottoman or Pahlavi coins and symbols. For our design, we decided not to use those symbols. Because of they history and the important of situation for us Kurdish People , that no meaning we use occupies symbols with our Kurdish Dress, Instead, we created our own designs inspired by Kurdish culture, including Shamaran, the mountains of Kurdistan, and the Kurdish sun.
A coin with one side is Kurdistan 4 mountains and sun
and another side is Shamaran Symbol.
Handmade Perçkê — پرچکە
One of the most important parts of this Fês is the Perçkê (پرچکە) around the hat.
The Perçkê is made from very small metal beads, around 1.5–2 mm, made from alloy and copper with a gold-plated finish.
We source the beads and then send them to our team in Hawraman, Rojhilat, where Kurdish women make the Perçkê by hand. This is not a machine-made part. It takes time, patience, and skill to make.
In Hawraman, the Perçkê has traditionally been an important part of women's Kurdish headwear.
The Fês and Perçkê (فێس و پرچکە) were also once considered rare and valuable. In the 1980s, they were not easy to find and were expensive for many families. In some families, they were bought for important occasions, especially when a son was getting married. Because of this, the Fês and Perçkê were often associated with families who could afford them.
We wanted to bring this old tradition back in a new way while keeping the handmade character of the original.
Sar Perçam — سەر پەرچەم
The hat also comes with Sar Perçam, in two different sizes.
The larger piece goes over the hat, while the smaller piece has two hooks and is worn underneath the neck. It includes turquoise stones and a handmade line of turquoise beads.
These details are inspired by the traditional Kurdish headwear worn by women and our grandmothers in Hawraman.
Shamaran Details
There are also 10 hanging beads with Shamaran-inspired coins, with five on each side of the hat.
Together with the Perçkê, Sar Perçam, turquoise beads, coins, and other small details, they give the Fês its traditional and distinctive look.
Comfortable to Wear
The frame of the hat is made from soft black velvet. It is flexible and comfortable and can fit most head sizes.
Although it is inspired by traditional Kurdish headwear, we designed it so you can actually wear it comfortably today.
Made to Last
We make this Fês with high-quality materials and careful craftsmanship. It is designed to be something you can wear, keep, and eventually pass on to the next generation.
For us, this is more than just a hat. It is a piece connected to Kurdish history, family memories, craftsmanship, and culture.
Care
After wearing the hat, we recommend putting it back in its bag and avoiding leaving it exposed to air for long periods. This will help protect the color and appearance of the materials.
Designed by Kewsan
This Fês was designed by Kewsan, inspired by Kurdish history and traditions from different parts of Kurdistan.
Different materials and details came together from different places and countries, while the Perçkê was handmade by Kurdish women in Hawraman, Rojhilat.
We made this piece because we wanted to keep these traditions alive and create something that people can wear today while still feeling connected to where it comes from.
